One Night in Edinburgh – Nina Kaye

*SPOILER ALERT — PLEASE SKIP THE TRIGGER WARNINGS UNLESS YOU NEED TO READ THEM AS THEY WILL SPOIL THE STORY*

This book contains:

  • Embezzlement and fraud
  • Homelessness
  • Verbal sexual harassment.

Steph comes from a career pursuing family that constantly pressures her to be “better”, “earn more money” and generally be more “successful”. Even though she’s perfectly happy in her not for profit job that gives her immense fulfillment and satisfaction that she doesn’t think she could get from any other type of job.

Jamie on the other hand is a wildly successful entrepreneur whose friends mentioned he’d likely be a millionaire by the time he was 30. He embodies the exact type of success Steph’s family want from her, and yet he can’t seem to answer phone calls, has limited availability and often disappears for quite a while before returning.

Steph and Jamie meet on Hogmanay in Edinburgh by chance and hit it off immediately. Since Steph’s long-term partner has just come out to her, it’s her first holiday period being single since high school so the interest and connection with Jamie is totally foreign to her.

After an amazing first night together that ends with Jamie needing to grab his clothes and escape from her apartment when he ex returns, Steph is determined to find him again. Cue the adventure and uncertainty of them finding their way back together.

I really loved reading this as a nice relaxing, fun read about the holiday period and love coming together. What I wasn’t expecting was the way in which Nina addresses very real social stigmas that I’m sure impact many people on a daily basis.

I can’t go into it much because honestly, it’d spoil the entire story for you, and I don’t want to do that. But I honestly loved how Nina did this!

Having the past work and professional experience that I do; this really spoke to me, and I was so proud of how Nina addressed this stigma. It’s something I’ve had to explain to people in my life multiple times, and I really hope anyone that reads this book rethinks their perception of this stigma.

I absolutely loved the fun moments, the challenging moments, how Jamie handled her family at every turn and Steph’s own character development. Such a great read!
