Janie is the daughter of a famous musician and actress which has impacted the relationships she’s formed with others all her life. Knowing how many people have tried to use her to get access to her parents and their contacts, she’s reserved and only has a few close friends. On the other hand, she’s worked incredibly hard to achieve her dreams without using her parents influence because she’s determined to make it based on her own merits.

Zach had a troubling home life growing up, with a father who enjoyed abusing his mom and him, he’s very conscious of his behaviour and actions to ensure he never becomes like his father. At a young age he joined the army to get away from his father’s potential influence, and later in life started a security company with his old sergeant and a friend to give them more say over their careers. Which leads him to being hired to be Janie’s bodyguard, a gig he despises because it’ll take him away from more dangerous operations.

Michelle contacted me after she saw some reviews I’d done for Rachael Stewart, who she’d worked with on a series that came out earlier in the year. If you’ve seen my blog, you know I absolutely love Rachael’s works. So, when Michelle said her books are similar to Rachael’s, I figured I should give it a shot and see what I thought.

Rachael’s books often have very explicit sex scenes in them, they’re driven by an underlying serious theme. That theme changes from book to book, but their prominence in the storyline is always there. While this book didn’t include explicit sex scenes, there were definitely some sexy parts, and the concept of an underlying deep and serious theme was there as well.

In this case, the serious theme was about criminals and how they’re treated. In Janie’s case, she’s fighting for an improved justice system that helps those convicted to get back on their feet and prevent them committing crimes again. Whereas Zach believes all criminals should be locked up and treated as such.

Given their stark differences of opinions, you’d assume that there’d be some pretty difficult discussions. Maybe even a complete breakdown of any potential romance. And you wouldn’t be wrong. But the key difference here is the maturity that both Janie and Zach show.

It’s that maturity that many of us could learn from and use when we’re faced with difficult conversations. Especially if those conversations are driven by differences in opinions on topics that are highly emotive.

So, while it felt like a bit of an emotional rollercoaster with what Janie was going through, the they it was all handled was so good. For a first experience with Michelle’s writing, it was a really enjoyable one and I can see what she meant when she said I’d probably like her book given how much I love Rachael’s.
