Rose is one of three triplets sent to London to experience a season, with their guardian hoping they’ll find husbands. As the quiet, reserved sister who tends to be cautious, Rose is more likely to return to the school she was raised in to become a teacher than find a husband in London.
James is the Viscount Ashbourne, who’s aunt is sponsoring the triplet’s season, and is therefore hosting the three women. While he was always a cautious man, since he became the Viscount, he’s taken his duties very seriously and strived to be above reproach and to make all decisions with his mind in a calm and logical manner.
Rose and her two older sisters are sent to London to enjoy a season, and while there, attempt to learn the identity of their mother. As it’s assumed the was nobly born, their guardian feels that London will be the best place to discover who she was.
It feels like it’s been a while since I’ve read a regency romance. With the amount of fantasy and contemporary romance I’ve read this year, this was a nice change of pace.
With Catherine’s usual writing style of including the romance in a way that makes it obvious it’s a romance novel, but without being so obvious no other storylines can exist, we’re led into the mystery of the Belle’s mother’s identity. Not only do we learn that she’s nobly born, but her name was common enough that the task will not be easy.
As the girls were enjoying the season, I got to have the fun of trying to guess who their mother was. While I’m proud of myself for guessing correctly in the first instance of her being spoken about, I’m also glad that we don’t get her full story wrapped up at the end of this book.
Instead, Catherine has left us with the mystery of who their father is, and why their mother ended up in Scotland. With two more sisters yet to find romance, and who I believe will each get their own happy endings, I’m looking forward to finding out the answers to these questions!
Although I do have my own theories already.
