Welcome back all, I hope you’re looking forward to this review because this book is the first one where we really see the new direction the series is taking!
So we begin this book with Cratus standing on the highest point of Olympus getting ready to give himself over to Zeus for his punishment. Meanwhile Nike, his sister, was trying to talk him into running to try and save his life. Cept Cratus doesn’t run from anything. And his crime for which he needs to give himself up to Zeus for? He didn’t kill a particular child like he was ordered to.
Why did Zeus want that child killed? Because it was prophesied that this child would bring about the downfall of his reign in Olympus. And being the type of god that he is, he wasn’t to reign supreme forever more.
Now fast forward to modern day times and Cratus is working as a mechanic on minimal wage, he doesn’t talk (literally everyone thinks he’s mute), doesn’t socialise and keeps to himself. Which isn’t hard to encourage since he’s huge, looks menacing, has a scary scar on the right hand side of his face that’s so deep it looks like he’s probably missing his right eye. And Delphine and Phobos need to convince this guy to fight for Olympus? After Olympus has done this to him?
Jeeze I don’t like their chances of that happening! Specially when he was the god of strength and the son of Warcraft. Surely he’s gotta be prone to holding a grudge and when given an opportunity giving it back to them as bad as they gave to him right? I mean, I’m prone to that and I’m not particularly strong, or associated with war!
And I was proven right when he basically told Delphine and Phobos to get stuffed and then when Noir (our new uber, ultra enemy!) recruits Cratus to fight for his side of the war against Olympus. They even gave him the gift of a woman who looks suspiciously like the child he saved and was punished by Zeus for saving…
We go through a number of weird scenarios, meet some very odd demons, find out that there’s a bunch of Dream Hunters imprisoned and even come across some beings that have been mentioned in previous books. But this is where we really start to find out how evil Noir and his sister Azura really are. And what they intend for the world.
Which really isn’t much since they only want to destroy it and take over the entire universe. And since they are the children of the universe and draw power from the universe rather than from people worshipping them like the Greek gods. It means they are pretty damn powerful and probably not anyone you’d want to cross.
Yet Delphine uses every opportunity she’s given to try and convince Cratus to teach the Dream Hunter’s how to fight so that they can protect the human world against Noir and Azura. She eventually succeeds, and Cratus finally goes back to Olympus, overthrows Zeus and creates a new order of power. Including allowing the Dream Hunter’s to have their emotions back since there was no real reason to take them away from them to begin with them.
So I can honestly say i’m looking forward to sharing the rest of the series with you since my favourite book in the is getting closer! Also, writing up this review gave me flashbacks to another book that I really enjoyed. So much so I had to keep referring back to the book and keep things general to not accidentally mix up the facts between the two books.
For those of you who’ve read the series you might be able to guess which book I’m talking about. That one is one of those one’s that you don’t really think about being AMAZING until you start thinking about other books that then remind you of that one.
